Liz Boland

I am local girl, being brought up on my parents mixed farm west of Young.

I attended Young Public School and Young High School and later studied Ag Science at Wagga Ag College. I started learning the flute at the age of 8 under the guidance of Col Robens at YPS. I soon joined the YPS band and Young Town Band of which I have been a member for much of the past 40 years playing various instruments. I was also part of the High School band and Cadet band and over the past 10 years have been involved in many YRSM ensembles including Red Cherry Jazz, the Brass Ensemble, Flute Ensemble and Recorder Ensemble.

My first lesson at YRSM was on the oboe some 20 odd years ago. From there I went on to further my qualifications in flute and piccolo and recently obtained my Certificate of Performance in Flute. I have also learnt trumpet and french horn and most recently the saxophone, sitting many AMEB exams and attending many music workshops. One of my musical highlights was playing horn with the West of the Divide Wind Ensemble in Europe in 2016.

I joined the YRSM team as a tutor in 2008, teaching flute, piccolo and recorder. It has been a challenging time for me stepping outside my comfort zone but at the same time very exciting and rewarding. Music has become a huge part of my life with my two children following in my footsteps and doing very well with their chosen instruments.

I take great joy in seeing my students grow musically and having fun playing in small groups, bands and performing in concerts. I am actively involved in community events and encourage my students to do like-wise. I believe sharing your musical talents is a must, no-matter how good you think you are. And I believe everyone can learn an instrument… you just have to give it a go!
